The North Africa Biodiversity Programme
NABP Phase1 (1996-1998) Phase2 (1998-2001) Phase3 (2001-2005)


In the second phase (1998-2001), emphasis was put on community participation, where natural resource conservation activities were implemented with rural communities.

Awareness, technical assistance, technology and knowledge exchange actions were undertaken along with small-scale technical studies relative to medicinal and other economically useful plants, cheetah distribution and conservation, ecotourism, and traditional knowledge.

In each country, 2 sub-projects were implemented. Of these, one project in each country was a “women's project”.

Outputs:

  • Cheetah distribution in North Africa identified

  • A Guide to Medicinal Plants in Algeria produced

  • Propagation of medicinal plants tested

  • The book Wild Medicinal Plants in Egypt published

  • A booklet on biodiversity in Arabic produced

  • Medicinal plants in Toubkal National Park in Morocco inventoried

  • Small-scale work with communities, especially women, undertaken (experimental cultivation of medicinal plants, introduction of drying and distillation technology, fuel-efficient stoves, among others).
