December 2010

A wish for the Mediterranean

Dear friends and future collaborators,

The year 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, is coming to an end and the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN-Med) has concluded with a celebration of our first ten years of work and the organization of several days of get-together and debate during the IUCN Mediterranean Forum in Malaga.

Since I joined as the Director of the Centre in June, I have had the opportunity to meet our sponsors, members and collaborators, especially during the Mediterranean Forum, and it is to them that I would like to send a message of gratitude for their support in the arduous task of making the Mediterranean a model place for cooperation between countries and sectors, through its links with the IUCN Mediterranean office.

In this bulletin you will find access to contents developed during the IUCN Mediterranean Forum last November, the main conclusions and agreements reached, a gallery of photos, and ultimately, a platform that I hope will serve as a starting point to help encourage you to continue participating towards a better conservation of the Mediterranean.

Thank to all of you, these ten years of work for and with the Mediterranean has helped us to position IUCN-Med as a reference point and a platform to launch new initiatives among Mediterranean members and partners, for a more sustainable future, making the IUCN Centre of Cooperation:

• A reliable scientific voice in a complex socio-economic scenario where different actors come into play with diverse capacities and skills.
• A strong advisory body to give solutions to major environmental challenges of the region.
• An organization that focuses on designing innovative new alternatives for sustainable development combining traditional knowledge with new technologies.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone happy holidays and above all, that in 2011, we may continue celebrating the great successes that we achieve together, in the implementation of pragmatic solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources in the Mediterranean. I remain at your disposal to make it a reality.
