Biodiversity and governance in Al Hoceima

Al Hoceima National Park is located along the Mediterranean cliffs of Morocco in the unique ecoregion of the Alboran Sea. The Park hosts a high level of Mediterranean and Atlantic marine biodiversity, a variety of habitats (vertical cliffs, superficial caves, sandy bottoms) and important and vulnerable species, such as osprey (Pandion haliaetus), red corals (Corallium rubrum) and giant limpets (Patella ferruginea).

Morocco is improving its protected areas system, and the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation was asked to support the Moroccan administration. The first initiative, a project coordinated by IUCN-Med and the Haut Commissariat aux Eaux et Forets et la Lutte contre la Désertification (HCEFLCD), financed by the Spanish Organismo Autónomo de Parques Nacionales, has now finalised. This project has been carried out in close collaboration with local and international organisations among which SEO/BirdLife which has implemented a complementary project in the Park, financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
