The Aegean Islands in Greece

The Aegean Islands case site will focus around the Cyclades Islands of Greece. With 20 Municipalities and 11 Communes from the Kyklades county, the region has a very low population density (43.8 inhabitants/km²) made by 39 islands from which 24 are small islets not inhabited.

The Pegaso team will focus on the application of adaptation tools addressing fisheries, tourism and transportation coastal issues on Naxos Island. This in-depth work using more than 300 indicators (with 60 % already prepared) intends to assess and choose those appropriate for strategic planning at the region. Hands on workshops on participatory methods and collaborative work with other project partners are providing guidance on how to use this tool.

Interviews with different stakeholder´s groups (fishermen associations, administrative departments and environmental agencies among others) are the first steps enabling the team to communicate and learn on the priorities and challenges.

An evaluation tool to compare future scenarios of climate change (sea level rise) and land management (LEAC, Land and Ecosystem Accounting) will be explored and tested for analysis costs and benefits and proposing adaptation measures. The project team has elaborated already several working papers on their assessments concerning fisheries production, GIS mapping applications, coastal tourism and a preliminary evaluation with indicators. Additional results concerning their experiences with participatory methods that may be interest to other cases and local sites have also been prepared.

The case supervisor is Alexis Conides, Institute of Marine Biological Resources, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.
