Consolidating the methodology for assessing terrestrial ecosystems in Morocco

The third meeting of the working group "Terrestrial Ecosystems - Ecosystem Red List in Morocco" was held at theExperimental Station of Arid Zones(EEZA-CSIC), in Almería from 1 to 3 October 2013. This group is coordinated by the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation within the EuropeanPOCTEFEX-Transhabitat project and aims to create a typology of terrestrial ecosystem units in Morocco that could be evaluated and monitored over time.

During the meeting the Spanish and Moroccan experts forged ahead with the hierarchical classification of terrestrial ecosystems, and laid the foundation to include a description of climatic regionalization processes.

A data analysis is expected to be completed by the end of 2013. Subsequently, a catalogue of the ecosystems based on the IUCN categories will be realized and the discussion of the results is likely to be ready in early February 2014.
The experts will help in identifying if an ecosystem is vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, based on a set of internationally accepted criteria regarding risk assessment of collapse.
