PEGASO’s experience shared with the Alboran project

The PEGASO project and the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) were presented at the Poctefex Alboran project meeting held in Málaga (Spain) from 19 to 21 June. The Alboran meeting brought together more than 50 administration professionals, university and institutional researchers and non-governmental organization representatives from Morocco and Spain to present and discuss marine protected areas, conservation approaches for cetaceans and marine turtles, how to improve integrated coastal zone management and the development of global change indicators in the Alboran Sea.

The participants proposed a list of indicators based on an ecosystem approach to improve knowledge of global warming impacts. They also exchanged experiences on integrated coastal zone management in the two countries.

The objective of this technical meeting was to exchange experiences and approaches and to lay the foundations for a network of specialists from both sides of the Mediterranean, in order to improve conservation in the Alboran Sea.

The event was organized by the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, in collaboration with the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, Almería University and the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries of Morocco.

The PEGASO Spatial Data Infrastructure team from the University of Seville will also soon share their experience at the forthcoming technical meeting for the development of the Alboran Sea Geoportal.
