Algeria

In Algeria, the environmental education programme aimed at promoting awareness of the population on the knowledge, protection and conservation of the natural heritage, the fight against the causes of degradation of nature and the respect of the ecological balance.

Awareness activities took place through the organization of scientific events for the public, such as study days, seminars and workshops, expositions, radio shows and brochures, concerning medicinal plants, the conservation and management of habitats, the sustainable use of natural resources in the regions of the south of Algeria and the conservation and rehabilitation of threatened wildlife in general, and the cheetah in particular.

A small guide for environmental educators in Algeria was produced.

Different environmental education materials were produced on medicinal plants, including posters, brochures, seeds and specimens. A herbarium of twenty specimens of medicinal plants was collected to be used during expositions and awareness days.

Finally, posters on the juniper, pasturing activities and rural women, and a leaflet on women and biodiversity and medicinal plants were also produced to help promote awareness on the role of women in biodiversity conservation and involve women in the sustainable use of biodiversity resources.
