Egypt
Pamphlets and other educational materials were prepared for mass media personnel, teachers and educated but non-specialised people on biodiversity and natural resources in Egypt.
An awareness raising campaign for the population at large was launched about the Wadi Degla Valley. The media was contacted and visits, meetings and workshops were organised for decision makers and the public. These efforts culminated with the proclamation of the Valley as a Protected Area.
Four Bedouin micro-nurseries were developed to help promote the involvement of local communities in the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants, and raise their awareness about the importance of protecting those plants for the well-being of the people in the area.
The Centre and Garden for the Conservation of Endangered Plants partly aimed at raising awareness among the stakeholders and users about the values of medicinal plants and at supporting education in the field of biodiversity conservation. The Centre was visited by students, science teachers, young researchers, tourists and local communities. Awareness was raised through the organization of workshops, seminars and lectures, the distribution of educational material and the display of video films and other material. Training was provided on the conservation of biodiversity, medicinal plants and folk medicine, cultivation and propagation of wild medicinal plants, as well as participatory approach methods.
Several publications providing scientific information and raising awareness on the value of medicinal plants were produced, including a book on ‘Wild Medicinal Plants in Egypt’, which is a very valuable resource for scientists and all individuals interested in this field.
