Nature as a solution to improve life quality in cities

IUCN organized a workshop to promote Nature Based Solutions during the 8th forum of GREEN CITIES, which took place in Malaga.

More than 50 representatives of regional, provincial and local organisations, specialists in planning and urban management, participated in the Workshop "Nature Based Solutions in cities" within the framework of 8th Forum of Intelligence and Urban Sustainability, known as GREEN CITIES, Which was held in Malaga from 7 to 8 June.

The workshop, promoted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the Málaga City Council, aimed to analyze the different experiences undertaken in Spain, Europe and the Mediterranean basin regarding Nature Based Solutions (NBS) applied in cities and urban environments.

IUCN is promoting globally NBS, applying different approaches, to address key social challenges such as food security, climate change, health, access to water, risk reduction and socio-economic development.

"Nature-based solutions seek to protect, manage and restore sustainably natural or modified ecosystems, while providing human well-being and benefits for biodiversity" said Antonio Troya, director of the IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Center.

During this workshop, various experiences developed in different local entities and municipalities as an example of solutions based on nature within the FEMP as river restoration (project IDARA) by the Diputación de Málaga, natural systems for water purification Of the Monleras Town Hall (Salamanca), the environmental recovery and management of the Pinoso Cryptohumid of Ayto Pinoso (Alicante) or the Madrid + Natural program of the City of Madrid, were presented.

The workshop was open to all people who share concern for the urban environment and nature in order to explore innovative approaches applied to Nature-Based Solutions.
