Endemic Freshwater Fish

Freshwater in the Mediterranean basin is of huge economic, environmental and livelihood importance.

The threatened status of plants and animals is one of the most widely used indicators for assessing the conditions of ecosystems and their biodiversity.

More than sixty experts gathered in a five-day workshop to finalise species assessments for amphibians and reptiles recorded in this region and develop a population assessment for freshwater fishes endemic to the Mediterranean.

Here follows a sample of the assessments and maps for some species:

Species IUCN Red List Category Map Draft Red List Assessment

Barbus graecus

Endangered
Chondrostoma willkommii Vulnerable
Alburnus akili Extinct
Barbus callensis Least concern
