Libyan Sea - Objectives

The Libyan coastLittle is known about the marine life along the Libyan coast and the adjacent deep waters. The project MedRas taking into account the baseline information available will work for:

 

  • Elaborating common criteria and a standard methodology for identifying sites of conservation interest, based on the CBD criteria and the current knowledge
  • Developing an overview of the marine environment to identify sites of conservation interest:
    • Gathering and analysis of existing data related to ecological or biological significant areas and species to enable identification of main habitat types and their distribution along the Libyan coast with species of special conservation interest and/or flagship species
    • Holding a national workshop with experts to define important main features to be considered (including sizes, boundaries, connectivity, etc.)
    • Proposing sites of interest for conservation of habitats and species
