Life ADAPTAMED kicks off: protected areas contribution against climate change

Despite the international and national efforts to fight climate change with mitigation actions, the stabilization of the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases is still out of hand. That is why climate change adaptation actions are considered absolutely necessary and complementary to mitigating ones. In Andalusia, three emblematic protected areas - Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Park and the Nature Areas of Sierra Nevada and Doñana - will benefit from various research and management actions to be carried out through the Life ADAPTAMED project (...)

The benefits of ecosystem services





There is almost no doubt about the role played by Protected Areas in the provision of ecosystem services and goods of various types. From the best preserved forests, coastal ecosystems, marshes, mountains and pre-desert scrublands we receive water supply services, medicinal plants, honey, energy, pine nuts, wood, mushrooms, hunting and agricultural products.

First governance sessions with the local population





The Life ADAPTAMED Project objectives have been shared with local communities in the three protected areas (Sierra Nevada, Doñana and Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Park) during the first informative sessions organized in collaboration with the relevant City Councils on 23 May, 8 June and 21 June 2016 respectively.

The secrets of jujube forests in Cabo de Gata-Níjar uncovered





Managing arid and semiarid ecosystems to guarantee the provision of benefits to the human population represents a challenge for current research and management. Although these ecosystems are not always appreciated by their aesthetic values, it should be noted that they cover 40% of the earth's surface to be able to understand their true dimension in what concerns the support of human wellbeing on the Planet.

Improving the management of cork trees in Doñana





The centenary oak trees in Doñana National Park are considered vital structures in transition ecosystems between scrublands and wetlands in the area. These trees are threatened nowadays by the presence of a pathogen oomycete (Phytophthora cinnamomi) which is included among the 100 worst alien invasive species in the world. This invasive species has spread around the world, being a threat to 900 woody plant species. It was first detected in meadows in Spain in 1992.

The importance of traditional irrigation ditches in Sierra Nevada





Mountain juniper groves in Sierra Nevada are key elements of this habitat of Community interest 5120 (mountain Cytisus purgans formations). This habitat play a fundamental role in various processes and delivers services of high importance including soil stabilization, prevention of eroding processes, water regulation, nitrogen and carbon fixation, mobility of nutrients, biodiversity enhancement, pollination and improving the quality of grazing lands for livestock breeding.

Exhibitions and public participation in Parque de las Ciencias to capitalize ADAPTAMED results





The initial results of the Life ADAPTAMED project will be shown in Parque de las Ciencias (Granada) from November 2017 onwards. The museum, a project partner together with Sierra Nevada and Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Parks, will be responsible for the dissemination of the conclusions of scientific research over three years, 2017, 2018 and 2019, through the production of two Windows to Science, a micro exhibition and the organization of an Encounter with scientists among other.
