From 29 September to 1 October in Malaga - On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, a series of events will promote innovative dialogues with the productive, technological and financial sectors, aiming to place conservation and biodiversity at the heart of a new economic model that supports the prosperity of Mediterranean societies in harmony with nature.

During the official presentation of the project, the Tunisian Minister of the Environment, Ms Leila Chikhaoui El-Mahdaw, underlined the importance of the programme and its allignment with the national strategy. Representatives of the DG Cooperation of the Balearic Regional Government confirmed their support for a second phase of the project. The event also allowed to visit several of the pilot sites in Tunisia.

In the framework of the Med Programme initiative, led by UNEP/MAP and funded by the Global Environment Facility, IUCN-Med and other NGOs will work in close collaboration with the Libyan Ministry of the Environment to help develop a robust network of marine protected areas. Dr. Ibrahim Al-Arabi Mounir, Minister of Environment, welcomed the project as a key step to establish a legal framework for MPAs and to develop management plans for three sites (El Kouf, Farwa and Ain Al Ghazala).

On 16 May, 2022 - Time: 13:30 – 16:00 (CEST) - Free online know-how webinar organised by IUCN-Med in collaboration with MedBycatch and Mitigating Dolphin Depredation project partners, under the framework of the MAVA Partnership project. The webinar aims show examples of building strong relationships and collaboration with fishers to address bycatch and depredation. Sessions will be held in English, with French interpretation. By applying a methodology jointly developed by UN and IUCN, the Plastic Waste Free Islands Med project has identified the critical hotspots of plastic pollution in Menorca and Cyprus, besides carrying out a number of assessments of economic, legal and policy frameworks. The final events on both islands concluded with the presentation of tangible action plans to prevent plastic leakage, co-developed in close cooperation with the public administrations and civil society organisations.

Organised in Malaga by IUCN-Med, the event connected conservation organisations from both sides of the Mediterranean, with the aim of exchanging the latest data and findings on the conservation of marine biodiversity in the region and its relationship with the fishing sector and management of marine protected areas. Several of these organisations are promoting cooperation on a regional scale through the Together for the Med initiative.

This free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), developed by the team of IUCN-Med, provides the basic knowledge for applying solutions to reduce mortality of raptors and other bird species due to interaction with power lines. The training is currently offered in French on the conservationtraining.org portal and includes a certification of completion.

The evidence of the environmental benefits of different cultural practices from the Mediterranean region was analysed at the last workshop of the Alliance for Mediterranean Nature and Culture held in the city of Mersin (Turkey) last month. The event was coordinated by IUCN-Med and Yolda Initative. A field visit to the Sarikeçili nomadic community gave participants the opportunity to discover how pastoral nomadism creates natural firebreaks that prevent the spread of fires.

The MedArtsal fair provided a space of visibility for both traditional and innovative methods of salt production in the Mediterranean, while creating partnership opportunities between professionals in this important sector for coastal ecosystems, aiming to support the commercial diversification of traditional and artisanal saltworks.
