Libyan Sea

Ruins of Leptis Magna, LibyaThe Libya coastline extends for almost 2000km and has a varying topography with a wide range of habitats and environmental variables. Libya is considered one of the most biologically diverse countries in the Mediterranean, distinguished by its rich and unique assemblages of globally significant biodiversity. The sea is the feeding and resting ground to many migratory birds, it has the most important nesting areas for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and it is believed may also contain the last refuge for bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) juveniles in the Mediterranean. Moreover, between the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) and the Gulf of Sirte (Libya) lies more than 1500 km2 of seagrass meadows, the largest in the Mediterranean.
